Statement by Deputy Permanent Representative of Ukraine Khrystyna Hayovyshyn at the informal meeting of the UNGA plenary to hear a briefing by the President of the General Assembly on his priorities for 2025

(14 January 2025)

Mr. President,

Thank you for the insightful briefing on the priorities of your presidency for the resumed part of the 79th session.

Delegation of Ukraine aligns itself with the Statement delivered on behalf of the European Union and would like to make few remarks in our national capacity.

Strong leadership of the General Assembly is essential for its further important role, as the most representative organ of the United Nations, in effectively addressing global challenges.

Ukraine fully supports the vision you have outlined. We remain committed to advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, to implementing the Pact for the Future and to a joint work for the strong substantive outcome of the high-level events to take place during the 79-th session.

As we strive to rebuild trust and reignite global solidarity amidst the pressure of global challenges it is critical to ensure that the United Nations, that is reaching its 80th anniversary, remains a strong and effective institution that upholds the principles of the UN Charter and international law in the first hand.

The principles enshrined in the UN Charter must guide our collective efforts as the international community will not achieve jointly set objectives and development goals unless peace and justice are restored. Unless accountability for all violations of international law committed by the aggressor state is ensured.

The path to a better common future begins with upholding international law, ending wars of aggression, and holding perpetrators accountable.

This February, we approach the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and it will be already eleventh year of its ongoing aggression against our country. The acts of Russian Federation's aggression have led to intentional immense human suffering, they continue to undermine international peace and security, global food and energy systems remain destabilized.

The situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine remains on the agenda of the General Assembly. We are looking forward to discussing this important and tragic item.

Ukraine remains dedicated to working with your Presidency, the UN membership and all stakeholders to address challenges and to build a secure, just, and sustainable world for all.

Thank you.
