by the Delegation of Ukraine 

during the Plenary Session of the ECOSOC Youth Forum “Youth Leadership, a Critical Force in Shaping a Sustainable and Inclusive Future for All”

Esteemed delegates,

I am honoured to speak as a Ukrainian Youth Delegate to the United Nations at this plenary session, while we discuss youth leadership as a force shaping a sustainable and inclusive future.

Ukraine continues to suffer from the fifth year of Russia’s full-scale invasion, and the twelfth year of war, which began in Crimea and the East of Ukraine, with Russia systematically targeting not only Ukrainian territory, but its people, communities, and younger generation. The Russian Federation has abducted at least 20,000 children — though the real number is likely much higher.

How can we speak about youth leadership and sustainable development while such crimes against humanity are being committed in 2026? Collective effort is needed to ensure accountability and the immediate and unconditional return of every Ukrainian child.

However despite all this, Ukrainian youth continue to contribute to national resilience and recovery, and Ukraine continues to act, to reform, and to invest in young people.

Even in the context of full-scale war, young people in Ukraine are successfully and effectively taking on critical roles across society. They serve in security and defence, lead humanitarian initiatives, support displaced communities, contribute to education and healthcare systems, and drive volunteering efforts across the country. This is a practical example that young people are capable of driving positive change across all sectors. It demonstrates that meaningful inclusion is not only possible, even in the context of ongoing war, but also represents a strategic investment for all generations.

However allow me again to stress one point: there can be no sustainable development and youth empowerment without security. There can be no inclusive future for all while Russia continues to violate international law DAILY.
