We highly commend UNICEF’s efforts in addressing the devastating humanitarian impact of Russia’s full-scale invasion, particularly in alleviating the suffering of millions of Ukrainian children. The war has profoundly affected all of Ukraine’s 7 million children, with nearly two-thirds displaced both internally and externally.

According to UNESCO, 75% of schoolchildren in Ukraine are experiencing stress, and 26% are suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder as a direct result of the war. 

Educational disruptions remain severe, with millions of children affected. Ukraine's Ministry of Education reports that approximately 3,500 educational institutions have been damaged by bombing and shelling, with 365 completely destroyed since February 2022. 

In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city close to the Russian border, relentless shelling by Russian forces has forced students to attend classes in underground schools, constructed with the support of UNICEF.

Due to relentless missile attacks across the country, all schools and educational facilities are now required to have shelters for in-person learning. UNICEF has played a significant role in supporting the Ukrainian government's efforts to build or reconstruct these shelters, ensuring children can continue their education in safety.
