Statement by the delegation of Ukraine at the informal meeting of the UN General Assembly plenary to hear an informal briefing from the head of the Independent Institution on Missing Persons in the Syrian Arab Republic
(12 June 2025)
Mr. President,
Ukraine aligns with the statement of the European Union and wishes to add the following.
We thank Ms. Karla Quintana for her comprehensive briefing. The establishment of the Independent Institution on Missing Persons in Syria is a crucial response to the calls of thousands of families enduring years of anguish and uncertainty. We welcome the victim-centered, impartial and inclusive mandate of the Institution.
Ukraine firmly supports all efforts to clarify the fate and whereabouts of all missing persons in Syria and to provide adequate support to victims, survivors and their families. This work is essential for justice, reconciliation and lasting peace.
Victims’ rights and dignity must remain at the center of all efforts and their meaningful participation is essential. We support a Syrian-led, inclusive political process respecting Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. The Syrian people deserve a future of peace and dignity after years of suffering under dictatorship.
Ukraine reaffirms its unwavering solidarity with all families of missing persons in Syria and is committed to providing them with full assistance. Their right to truth and justice must be upheld without delay.
Thank you.
